I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. <sup>6<\/sup>\u201cWhoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Romans 12:17\u201321 (NIV84)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><sup>17<\/sup>Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. <sup>18<\/sup>If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. <sup>19<\/sup>Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God\u2019s wrath, for it is written: \u201cIt is mine to avenge; I will repay,\u201d says the Lord. <sup>20<\/sup>On the contrary: \u201cIf your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.\u201d <sup>21<\/sup>Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the post-flood world, God establishes a principle of profound and radical importance: the infinite value of human life. He declares that He will demand an accounting for the life of a person, even from an animal. This is not about animal justice, but about establishing the utter uniqueness of humanity. Because we are made in God&#8217;s image, an attack on a human being is an attack on the reflection of God Himself. This is the foundation for all justice, all ethics, all human rights. It is a declaration that every single person, regardless of their utility, their accomplishments, or their perceived worth, carries an echo of the divine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This principle has staggering implications. It obliterates any basis for racism, for classism, for treating another person as a means to an end. As John Calvin noted, when we encounter another person, we are not to assess their merits, but to see the image of God in them, which &#8220;allures us to love and embrace them.&#8221; It calls us to be patient, forgiving, and hopeful for all individuals. This is not a call to ignore sin or injustice, but to recognize that the person who commits the injustice is still a ruined castle, a masterpiece vandalized, but a masterpiece nonetheless. Our response to evil must be tempered by the knowledge that the evil-doer is of infinite worth, just as we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Reflect, Share &amp; Prayer:<\/strong> Think about someone you find difficult to love or respect. How does the truth that they are made in God&#8217;s image challenge your perspective?
