Genesis 9:1\u20137 (NIV84)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/sup>Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, \u201cBe fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. 2<\/sup>The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. 3<\/sup>Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. 4<\/sup>\u201cBut you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. 5<\/sup>And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. 6<\/sup>\u201cWhoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man. 7<\/sup>As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

After the flood, God reissues the great mandate given to Adam: “Be fruitful and multiply.<\/em>” At first glance, it seems like a simple reset, a second chance at the original project. Significantly, God affirms that humanity is still made “in the image of God.<\/em>” The imago Dei<\/em> was not washed away in the flood; our intrinsic dignity and responsibility remain. The fundamental purpose for which we were made\u2014to marry, to build, to create, to cultivate civilization\u2014is still in effect. We are not so broken that we are absolved of this great calling. The canvas is sullied, but the artist’s original design is still discernible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, the differences are stark and sobering. Where Adam’s relationship with creation was one of peaceful rule and dominion, Noah’s is to be one of “fear and dread<\/em>.” The harmony is gone, replaced by conflict and violence. This new reality is not a command to be cruel, but a description of the world as it now is. Our power over nature remains, but it is now fraught with struggle. God\u2019s prohibition against consuming blood underscores this new, fractured relationship. Life is sacred, belonging to God alone, and even in the necessary act of eating, humanity is to be reminded that we are stewards, not ultimate owners, of the life we take. This command serves as a check on our power, a constant reminder that even legitimate authority must be exercised with humility and reverence for the Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
