Listen! Your brother\u2019s blood cries out to me from the ground. <sup>11<\/sup>Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother\u2019s blood from your hand. <sup>12<\/sup>When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.\u201d <sup>13<\/sup>Cain said to the Lord, \u201cMy punishment is more than I can bear. <sup>14<\/sup>Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.\u201d <sup>15<\/sup>But the Lord said to him, \u201cNot so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over.\u201d Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. <sup>16<\/sup>So Cain went out from the Lord\u2019s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Hebrews 12:24 (NIV84)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><sup>24<\/sup>to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The battle is lost. The crouching beast has sprung, and Abel lies dead in the field. When confronted by God, Cain\u2019s response is not the shattered cry of a penitent, but the whimper of self-pity. <em>\u201cMy punishment is greater than I can bear,\u201d<\/em> he protests. He mourns the consequences, not the crime. He is the archetypal unrepentant soul, more concerned with his own suffering than with the horror of his sin or the heart of the God he has offended. At this moment, justice demands satisfaction. The very ground cries out for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">And what is God\u2019s response? It is an act of such staggering mercy that it almost defies belief. To Cain\u2019s plea for his own life, God answers by placing a <em>&#8220;mark&#8221;<\/em> on him. This is not, as is often imagined, a brand of shame. It is a sign of divine protection. The just Judge of all the earth makes Himself the personal guardian of the first murderer. Even in the face of unrepentant, self-pitying sin, God responds to the faintest flicker of an appeal with an act of preservation. Here we see the tension that will define the rest of the Bible: a God of absolute justice who is also a God of profound, almost reckless, mercy. How can these two coexist? The writer of Hebrews gives us the answer. He says that the blood of Jesus <em>\u201cspeaks a better word than the blood of Abel.\u201d<\/em> Abel\u2019s blood cried out from the ground for justice. But the blood of Christ, the ultimate innocent victim slain by the Cains of this world, cries out for something else entirely: \u201cGrace! Grace for all who believe in me! Father, forgive them!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Reflect, Share &amp; Prayer:<\/strong> Think of a time you have wronged someone. Is your first instinct to feel sorry for the consequences you might face, or for the pain you have caused?
