Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.\u201d <sup>17<\/sup>To Adam he said, \u201cBecause you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, \u2018You must not eat of it,\u2019 \u201cCursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. <sup>18<\/sup>It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. <sup>19<\/sup>By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The curse that follows the Fall is not the creation of new, evil things, but the twisting of things that were divinely pronounced &#8220;good.&#8221; It is as if a beautiful song is now to be sung permanently off-key. The goodness is still recognizable, but it is now fraught with pain, frustration, and sorrow. We see this in the two core tasks of the original creation mandate: <em>filling<\/em> the earth and <em>subduing<\/em> it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To the woman, God says her pain in childbearing will be greatly multiplied. The <em>&#8220;filling&#8221;<\/em> of the earth, a joyful and creative act, will now be marked by agony. Furthermore, her relationship to her husband is distorted. <em>&#8220;Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.&#8221;<\/em> What was designed as a dance of mutual, complementary love becomes a painful struggle of desire and domination, a battle of the sexes that has defined so much of human history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To the man, God says the ground itself is now cursed. The <em>&#8220;subduing&#8221;<\/em> of the earth &#8211; the good, dignified, creative act of work &#8211; will now become <em>&#8220;painful toil.&#8221;<\/em> Thorns and thistles will frustrate his efforts. The gift of meaningful labor is not removed, but it is now tainted with sweat, frustration, and the constant feeling of pushing a boulder uphill. In all our work, whether in the field, the office, or the studio, we are able to envision far more than we can accomplish. The very ground, which was given as a gift to sustain him, will in the end consume him: <em>&#8220;for dust you are and to dust you shall return.&#8221;<\/em> The curse is this: the very things God gave us for our flourishing are now the primary arenas of our pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Reflect, Share &amp; Prayer:<\/strong> Consider the main areas of your life where you find both great meaning and great frustration (e.g., your work, your parenting, your marriage). How does understanding this tension as a result of the Fall &#8211; a twisting of a good thing &#8211; help you to persevere with hope rather than despair?
