You have set your glory above the heavens. <sup>2<\/sup>From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. <sup>3<\/sup>When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, <sup>4<\/sup>what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? <sup>5<\/sup>You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. <sup>6<\/sup>You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: <sup>7<\/sup>all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, <sup>8<\/sup>the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. <sup>9<\/sup>O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To say that we are made in God\u2019s \u201cimage\u201d is a statement so familiar it has almost lost its startling power. We tend to think of it as a vague compliment, as though the Creator, in a moment of fondness, decided to fashion a race of miniature, less-impressive versions of Himself. But the truth is something far more active and profound. The ancient mind would have grasped two metaphors immediately: the statue and the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In the ancient world, a king would place a statue of himself in a distant province to declare his authority. The statue was not the king, but it was a tangible symbol of his rule, his presence, and his will. This is the first meaning of the image. God, the Great King, has not placed stone statues in His creation, but living, breathing, walking ones: us. We are called to be His vice-regents, exercising His authority by ruling over creation as He would\u2014bringing order from chaos, cultivating potential, and caring for His world. We are not merely clever animals; we are ambassadors tasked with representing the King\u2019s benevolent reign in every corner of His domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Furthermore, we are like a mirror. A mirror does not contain a painting of the sun; it catches the sun\u2019s light and reflects it. To do so, it must be angled correctly, turned toward the source of the light. The <em>Imago Dei<\/em>, then, is not primarily a list of qualities we possess\u2014like reason or creativity\u2014but a reflection of God\u2019s attributes for which we were designed. Our very being is created to be in relationship with God, to face Him, and in so doing, to reflect His character back into the world. It is not that we <em>have<\/em> a relationship with God, but that our existence is, at its core, <em>intended to be<\/em> this relationship. We are mirrors, and we only function as intended when we are turned toward the Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Reflect, Share &amp; Prayer:<\/strong> In what specific area of your life\u2014your work, your family, your community\u2014can you more intentionally act as God&#8217;s representative this week, reflecting His character and carrying out His caring rule?
