{"id":225682,"date":"2025-09-19T01:43:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vayhub.us\/rdpt22\/?p=225682"},"modified":"2025-09-15T13:48:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T20:48:08","slug":"gea02-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vayhub.us\/rdpt22\/gea02-5","title":{"rendered":"GeA02-5: The Ultimate Sabbath"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Read:<\/strong> Hebrews 3:7-4:11 (NIV84)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><sup>7<\/sup>So, as the Holy Spirit says: \u201cToday, if you hear his voice, <sup>8<\/sup>do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert, <sup>9<\/sup>where your fathers tested and tried me and for forty years saw what I did. <sup>10<\/sup>That is why I was angry with that generation, and I said, \u2018Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known my ways.\u2019 <sup>11<\/sup>So I declared on oath in my anger, \u2018They shall never enter my rest.\u2019 \u201d <sup>12<\/sup>See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. <sup>13<\/sup>But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin\u2019s deceitfulness. <sup>14<\/sup>We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. <sup>15<\/sup>As has just been said: \u201cToday, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.\u201d <sup>16<\/sup>Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? <sup>17<\/sup>And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the desert? <sup>18<\/sup>And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed? <sup>19<\/sup>So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief. <sup>1<\/sup>Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. <sup>2<\/sup>For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. <sup>3<\/sup>Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, \u201cSo I declared on oath in my anger, \u2018They shall never enter my rest.\u2019 \u201d And yet his work has been finished since the creation of the world. <sup>4<\/sup>For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: \u201cAnd on the seventh day God rested from all his work.\u201d <sup>5<\/sup>And again in the passage above he says, \u201cThey shall never enter my rest.\u201d <sup>6<\/sup>It still remains that some will enter that rest, and those who formerly had the gospel preached to them did not go in, because of their disobedience. <sup>7<\/sup>Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: \u201cToday, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.\u201d <sup>8<\/sup>For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. <sup>9<\/sup>There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; <sup>10<\/sup>for anyone who enters God\u2019s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. <sup>11<\/sup>Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Read:<\/strong> Mark 2:23\u201328 (NIV84)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><sup>23<\/sup>One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. <sup>24<\/sup>The Pharisees said to him, \u201cLook, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?\u201d <sup>25<\/sup>He answered, \u201cHave you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? <sup>26<\/sup>In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.\u201d <sup>27<\/sup>Then he said to them, \u201cThe Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. <sup>28<\/sup>So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The weekly pattern of work and rest, established in the rhythm of creation itself, is a shadow pointing to a far greater reality. As the author of Hebrews so powerfully argues, there is a deeper, fuller kind of rest that God intends for His people\u2014a rest that the Israelites in the wilderness failed to enter, and a rest that remains available to us today. This is the ultimate Sabbath, and it is not a day of the week, but a Person: Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">God\u2019s rest in Genesis was the enjoyment of a finished work. In the New Testament, we hear the echo of this concept in Christ&#8217;s cry from the cross: &#8220;It is finished.&#8221; The great redemptive work is complete. When we realize that we are saved not by our own striving, our own good works, or our frantic efforts to justify ourselves, but solely by grace through faith in Christ&#8217;s finished work, we finally &#8220;rest from our work&#8221; in the truest sense. This is the gospel&#8217;s image of God&#8217;s Sabbath rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is why true worship must always be the heart of any Sabbath. In worship, we cease from our own labors and re-remember the finished work of Christ for us. This frees us from the tyranny of overwork, which is so often driven by a desperate need to earn an identity or a sense of self-worth. When we use our work to achieve what only Christ can give, the work itself becomes a burden. But when we first &#8220;rest&#8221; from our labor by trusting in the finished work of Christ, we are then able to truly enter the beautiful rhythm of work and rest that God designed. As Jesus himself declared, &#8220;The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.&#8221; He is the key. It is only as we enjoy the rest of redemption that we can truly enter into the rest of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Reflect, Share &amp; Pray:<\/strong> In what areas of your life are you still trying to &#8220;work&#8221; for your own salvation or sense of worth, rather than entering the true Sabbath rest that comes from trusting completely in the finished work of Christ?
