26<\/sup>Then God said, \u201cLet us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.\u201d 27<\/sup>So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28<\/sup>God blessed them and said to them, \u201cBe fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/sup>O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2<\/sup>From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3<\/sup>When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4<\/sup>what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5<\/sup>You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6<\/sup>You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: 7<\/sup>all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, 8<\/sup>the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9<\/sup>O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The grand symphony of creation reaches its crescendo in a sudden, startling change of tone. For six days, the formula has been consistent: “Let there be…” and it was so. But now, the music swells. The singular voice becomes a plural consultation: “Let us<\/strong> make mankind in our<\/strong> image, in our<\/strong> likeness.” Something entirely new, a creature of a different order, is about to step onto the world stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the ancient world, when a king conquered a vast territory, he would erect statues of himself in the far-flung provinces. These statues were not idols to be worshipped; they were symbols of his rule, his presence, and his authority. They declared to all who saw them: “This land is under the king’s dominion. He is sovereign here.” This is the very meaning of the Hebrew word for “image.” God, the Great King, places in His newly formed creation living, breathing, walking statues of Himself. That is what you are. You are not merely a clever animal; you are a viceroy, an ambassador, a representative of the King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This truth is the bedrock of human dignity. It means your value is not derived from your utility, your intelligence, your appearance, or your accomplishments. Your value is inherent, stamped upon you by the Creator Himself. But this dignity also comes with a grand calling. We are commanded to “rule” and “subdue,” not as tyrants who exploit creation for selfish gain, but as wise and benevolent governors who care for the King\u2019s domain and extend His creative, life-giving order. To be human is to be God’s representative on earth, tasked with reflecting His character into every corner of His world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
