Why is it not enough to just not follow your ‘old self’ but be more proactive in doing good?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

12<\/sup>Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body<\/em> so that you obey its evil desires. 13<\/sup>Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14<\/sup>For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.<\/p>\nRomans 6:12-14 (NIV)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In Romans 6, Paul stresses the importance of not only rejecting our former, sinful ways (the ‘don’ts’<\/em>), but actively pursuing righteousness (the ‘dos’<\/em>). This proactive approach is crucial for living out our new identity in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before believing in Christ, sin dominated our lives. Romans 6:12 warns us,\u00a0\u201cDo not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0This instruction underlines the need not just to avoid sin but to resist its influence actively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul continues by explaining the dual nature of our transformation in Romans 6:13. He first instructs us, \u201cdo not offer any part of your body to sin as an instrument of wickedness.\u201d<\/strong> Simply stopping there, however, is incomplete. Paul emphasizes the positive aspect of transformation by adding, \u201cbut rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.\u201d<\/strong> This verse clarifies that being a Christian isn\u2019t just about avoiding wrongdoing; it\u2019s about dedicating ourselves to doing good actively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shift from being under the law to being under grace, as stated in Romans 6:14, \u201cFor sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace,\u201d<\/strong> supports this dynamic way of living. Being under grace frees us from the penalty and power of sin, empowering us to live positively in a way that the law never could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding this shift is essential because it affects our motivation and our actions. When we realize that we\u2019re not just trying to avoid punishment (as the law implies) but are called to live out a new, grace-filled life, our entire approach to ethics and behavior changes. This understanding leads to a life characterized not by mere rule-following but by a heartfelt desire to embody Christ\u2019s love and righteousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul also emphasizes the importance of internalizing this new reality in Romans 6:11, \u201cIn the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.\u201d<\/strong> This isn\u2019t just about acknowledging our new status but about living it out fully. It involves a daily commitment to reject sin and embrace the behaviors and attitudes that reflect our new life in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In summary, Paul\u2019s message in Romans 6 is clear: it\u2019s not sufficient to merely avoid doing wrong (not following our \u2018old self\u2019). Instead, we must actively engage in doing good, offering ourselves as instruments of righteousness. This proactive stance is what marks true transformation\u2014a life not just free from sin but abundant in goodness, reflecting the grace and love of God through our actions. This approach not only aligns with our new identity in Christ but also strengthens our witness to the world about the power and beauty of the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
