How could a Moral Person be ‘Under Sin’?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1<\/sup>What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2<\/sup>Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God. 3<\/sup>What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God\u2019s faithfulness? 4<\/sup>Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: \u201cSo that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge.\u201d 5<\/sup>But if our unrighteousness brings out God\u2019s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) 6<\/sup>Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world? 7<\/sup>Someone might argue, \u201cIf my falsehood enhances God\u2019s truthfulness and so increases his glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?\u201d 8<\/sup>Why not say\u2014as some slanderously claim that we say\u2014\u201cLet us do evil that good may result\u201d? Their condemnation is just! 9<\/sup>What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.<\/p>\nRomans 3:1\u20139 (NIV)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In Romans 3:1-20, Paul continues his argument that no one can be declared righteous before God by observing the law. He anticipates and addresses potential objections from those in the Roman church with a Jewish background, engaging in a Q&A style dialogue to meet them where they are at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: Paul, are you saying there is no advantage to biblical religion (Rom. 3:1)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: No, I\u2019m not saying that. There is great value in having and knowing the words of God (Rom. 3:2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: Yes, but those words have failed, haven\u2019t they, because so many haven\u2019t believed the gospel of righteousness revealed in God\u2019s Son Jesus. What has happened to the promises (Rom. 3:3a)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: Despite his people\u2019s failure to believe, God\u2019s promises to save are advancing. Our faithlessness only reveals how committed to his truth he is (think of what he\u2019s done in order to be faithful to his promises!) (Rom. 3:3b\u20134).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: But if unrighteousness is necessary for God\u2019s righteousness to be seen, how is it fair for him to judge us (Rom. 3:5)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: On that basis, God would not judge anyone in the world. And we (ie: Paul and religious Jews) all agree God should judge (Rom. 3:6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: Well then, if me sinning makes God look better, that means that I should sin more, shouldn\u2019t I, so that his glory is more clearly seen (Rom. 3:7\u20138)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A: I\u2019ve been accused of thinking this, and I certainly don\u2019t. And saying you\u2019re sinning so that God will love you is an attitude that is absolutely worthy of judgment (Rom. 3:8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q: What shall we conclude then? (Rom. 3:9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is where Paul has been leading us since Rom. 1:18. And the conclusion is: everyone is \u201cunder sin\u201d! To be “under sin” is a legal term meaning we are citizens of sin, while unrighteousness refers to our wrong standing before God and others. Although this doesn’t mean every person is equally sinful, Paul argues we are all in the same lost condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine three people trying to swim from Hawaii to Japan. One can’t swim at all and sinks immediately. Another is a weak swimmer who drowns after 60 feet. The third is a championship swimmer who makes it 50 miles before drowning. In the end, none come close to reaching Japan and all are equally dead. Similarly, the religious person trusting in morality and the pagan indulging in sensuality are both far from a righteous heart. They are equally lost and condemned to perish, all “under sin.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul’s argument strips away any grounds we may think we have for being right in God’s sight. The only solution is to turn from trusting in our own goodness and trusting wholly in Christ can any person be made right with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If all people, regardless of background or moral standing, are equally “under sin” and in need of God’s grace, then how should this truth shape the way we view ourselves and others?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
