How Much of Our Faith Identity Depends on What We Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

25<\/sup>For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. 26<\/sup>So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? 27<\/sup>Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. 28<\/sup>For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 29<\/sup>But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.<\/p>\nRomans 2:25\u201329 (ESV)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In Romans 2:25-29, Paul challenges the notion that external religious markers, like circumcision for the Jews, could bestow righteousness. Originally in Genesis 17:1-14, circumcision was meant to signify a Jew’s entrance into God’s community. However, it had become a source of pride with the complacent assumption that mere external markers could confer righteousness. Paul argues that true faith is not about outward signs, but about inward transformation by the Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This challenge remains relevant today, for people still identify with a religion based on their upbringing. Even in churches, it’s possible to put faith in membership or participation rather than in Christ. We can paraphrase Paul’s words: “So what if you have been baptized or are a church member? This only counts if there has been a real change in your life, if your heart has been truly affected. A true Christian is one inwardly; what matters is a supernatural work of the Spirit, not a human ritual.<\/em>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This “dead orthodoxy” turns the church into a comfort zone for those who only think they are secure in Christ. Different churches address this insecurity in various ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
