{"id":224880,"date":"2023-11-22T02:27:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-22T09:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vayhub.us\/rdpt22\/?p=224880"},"modified":"2023-11-21T17:51:04","modified_gmt":"2023-11-22T00:51:04","slug":"god-or-satan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vayhub.us\/rdpt22\/god-or-satan","title":{"rendered":"God or Satan?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><em><sup>1<\/sup>Once again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and he caused David to harm them by taking a census. \u201cGo and count the people of Israel and Judah,\u201d the Lord told him. <sup>2<\/sup>So the king said to Joab and the commanders of the army, \u201cTake a census of all the tribes of Israel\u2014from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south\u2014so I may know how many people there are.\u201d <sup>3<\/sup>But Joab replied to the king, \u201cMay the Lord your God let you live to see a hundred times as many people as there are now! But why, my lord the king, do you want to do this?\u201d <sup>4<\/sup>But the king insisted that they take the census, so Joab and the commanders of the army went out to count the people of Israel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em><sup>10<\/sup>But after he had taken the census, David\u2019s conscience began to bother him. And he said to the Lord, \u201cI have sinned greatly by taking this census. Please forgive my guilt, Lord, for doing this foolish thing.\u201d <sup>11<\/sup>The next morning the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, who was David\u2019s seer. This was the message: <sup>12<\/sup>\u201cGo and say to David, \u2018This is what the Lord says: I will give you three choices. Choose one of these, and I will inflict it on you.\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>2 Samuel 24:1\u20134, 10-12 NLT<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">When we reread the same story in 1 Chronicles 21, we found more variants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\"><em><sup>1<\/sup>Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel. <sup>2<\/sup>So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, \u201cTake a census of all the people of Israel\u2014from Beersheba in the south to Dan in the north\u2014and bring me a report so I may know how many there are.\u201d <sup>3<\/sup>But Joab replied, \u201cMay the Lord increase the number of his people a hundred times over! But why, my lord the king, do you want to do this? Are they not all your servants? Why must you cause Israel to sin?\u201d <sup>4<\/sup>But the king insisted that they take the census, so Joab traveled throughout all Israel to count the people. Then he returned to Jerusalem<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\"><em><sup>7<\/sup>God was very displeased with the census, and he punished Israel for it. <sup>8<\/sup>Then David said to God, \u201cI have sinned greatly by taking this census. Please forgive my guilt for doing this foolish thing.\u201d <sup>9<\/sup>Then the Lord spoke to Gad, David\u2019s seer. This was the message: <sup>10<\/sup>\u201cGo and say to David, \u2018This is what the Lord says: I will give you three choices. Choose one of these, and I will inflict it on you.\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>1 Chronicles 21:1-4, 7-10 NLT<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This added more confusion to the text. Maybe by now, you have figured out the puzzle of 1) Why did God tell David, &#8216;<em>Go and count the people of Israel and Judah<\/em>&#8216; (2 Sam. 24:1) and then inflict suffering when David did that (2 Sam. 24:12). But with 1 Chronicles 21, you will need to solve another puzzle: 2) Is the Lord (2 Sam. 24:1) the same as Satan (1 Chron. 21:1)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">How would you resolve these &#8216;contradictions&#8217; and &#8216;discrepancies&#8217;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">We are down a few teams left, so the question is harder: <em style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;How would you explain the contradiction between &#8216;the Lord&#8217; (2 Sam. 24:1) and &#8216;Satan&#8217; (1 Chron. 21:1)?
