Open up your Bible and read 1 Corinthians 5:1\u20138. We set up the situation yesterday: A church member was in a relationship with his stepmother\u2014something even the pagans of Corinth thought offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1<\/sup>I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you\u2014something that even pagans don\u2019t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother. 2<\/sup>You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship. 3<\/sup>Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit. And as though I were there, I have already passed judgment on this man 4<\/sup>in the name of the Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church. I will be present with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus. 5<\/sup>Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns. 6<\/sup>Your boasting about this is terrible. Don\u2019t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough? 7<\/sup>Get rid of the old \u201cyeast\u201d by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us. 8<\/sup>So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread of sincerity and truth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Paul leaves no room for questioning in this passage. What the man is doing is wrong. Very wrong. So wrong that Paul wants him out of the church. In verses 6\u20138, he alludes to an Old Testament tradition to show the Corinthians why it\u2019s so important to weed out the sin from the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s take a look at what Paul\u2019s referring to in verses 6\u20138. Flip back to Exodus and read Exodus 12:1\u201320. While you\u2019re reading, jot down what the blood of the Passover lamb did for the Israelites and what the Israelites were supposed to do with leaven, aka yeast. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
1<\/sup>While the Israelites were still in the land of Egypt, the Lord gave the following instructions to Moses and Aaron: 2<\/sup>\u201cFrom now on, this month will be the first month of the year for you. 3<\/sup>Announce to the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each family must choose a lamb or a young goat for a sacrifice, one animal for each household. 4<\/sup>If a family is too small to eat a whole animal, let them share with another family in the neighborhood. Divide the animal according to the size of each family and how much they can eat. 5<\/sup>The animal you select must be a one-year-old male, either a sheep or a goat, with no defects. 6<\/sup>\u201cTake special care of this chosen animal until the evening of the fourteenth day of this first month. Then the whole assembly of the community of Israel must slaughter their lamb or young goat at twilight. 7<\/sup>They are to take some of the blood and smear it on the sides and top of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the animal. 8<\/sup>That same night they must roast the meat over a fire and eat it along with bitter salad greens and bread made without yeast. 9<\/sup>Do not eat any of the meat raw or boiled in water. The whole animal\u2014including the head, legs, and internal organs\u2014must be roasted over a fire. 10<\/sup>Do not leave any of it until the next morning. Burn whatever is not eaten before morning. 11<\/sup>\u201cThese are your instructions for eating this meal: Be fully dressed, wear your sandals, and carry your walking stick in your hand. Eat the meal with urgency, for this is the Lord\u2019s Passover. 12<\/sup>On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn son and firstborn male animal in the land of Egypt. I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt, for I am the Lord! 13<\/sup>But the blood on your doorposts will serve as a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. This plague of death will not touch you when I strike the land of Egypt. 14<\/sup>\u201cThis is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the Lord. This is a law for all time. 15<\/sup>For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the first day of the festival, remove every trace of yeast from your homes. Anyone who eats bread made with yeast during the seven days of the festival will be cut off from the community of Israel. 16<\/sup>On the first day of the festival and again on the seventh day, all the people must observe an official day for holy assembly. No work of any kind may be done on these days except in the preparation of food. 17<\/sup>\u201cCelebrate this Festival of Unleavened Bread, for it will remind you that I brought your forces out of the land of Egypt on this very day. This festival will be a permanent law for you; celebrate this day from generation to generation. 18<\/sup>The bread you eat must be made without yeast from the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month until the evening of the twenty-first day of that month. 19<\/sup>During those seven days, there must be no trace of yeast in your homes. Anyone who eats anything made with yeast during this week will be cut off from the community of Israel. These regulations apply both to the foreigners living among you and to the native-born Israelites. 20<\/sup>During those days you must not eat anything made with yeast. Wherever you live, eat only bread made without yeast.\u201d<\/p>Exodus 12:1\u201320 (NLT)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
There are two big parallels to note from Exodus 12. The first is that Paul calls Jesus our Passover lamb. He\u2019s reminding us of what Jesus\u2019s death means for us. He freed us from death. He brought us into God\u2019s family. He paid the consequence for our sin. Paul wants the church to remember why we take sin seriously. It\u2019s because our God did, which led to Jesus\u2019s death and our salvation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
God\u2019s grace isn\u2019t a free ticket to do whatever we want in life. We remove sin from our lives because of the grace we have through Jesus. He hated sin. We should too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second parallel from Exodus 12 is that God didn\u2019t tell the Israelites to throw leaven out of their houses just for fun. He had a purpose behind it: to prepare them to celebrate, remember, and enjoy the freedom he gave them from slavery in Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
God doesn\u2019t ask us to remove sin from our lives without a reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes we focus so much on saying no to our sin that we forget what we\u2019re saying yes to when we turn away from sinful habits. Repenting of sin is more than turning your back on sin. It\u2019s also about what you turn toward\u2014about what you get to experience because you\u2019ve let go of sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So when it comes to finding a balance between being hyper-vigilant or too gracious about sin, we can start by remembering the grace God\u2019s already given us through Jesus. When we say no to sin, we\u2019re saying yes to grace. To love. To freedom. We experience true life when we put death behind us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imagine what would look like if your life were completely free from sin. How would your friendships change? Your self-talk? Your attitude at work? Take some time to reflect and journal: What would your life look like when you say “yes” to God and “no” to sin? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to the book of 1 Corinthians. As we study this letter, we\u2019ll step into ancient Corinth while reading the words Paul wrote to the fledgling church. We\u2019re going to see that, like all churches, the Corinthian church wasn\u2019t perfect. They had a problem. A big problem. And it grew to such an epic proportion that it poisoned the church in various ways. Paul wrote to provide the antidote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this study, we\u2019re going to explore Paul\u2019s solution to both the problems in Corinth and in us. Through his words, we\u2019ll learn more about Jesus\u2019s plan for a people who live radically different lives than the world around them. But we\u2019ll also take a hard look in the mirror and ask the Spirit to point out our own self-centered attitudes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reading the Bible isn\u2019t just something we do to impress people or to check off on a to-do list. It\u2019s about getting to know God. It\u2019s about shaping every minute of our lives to reflect Jesus. It\u2019s about thinking differently in the power of the Spirit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
So as we approach each week, we\u2019ll focus on one main idea. That main idea will point us to change how we think, feel, and act. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This week, we\u2019ll see that resolving relational disunity begins in our hearts because division is a symptom of self-focus. From this main idea, we have three goals: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
- We want to understand that selfishness has dire consequences, both in the local church and in us as individuals. <\/li>
- We want to feel motivated to reject selfishness and embrace a life that\u2019s Christ-and-others-centered. <\/li>
- We want to identify and turn away from the ways we\u2019re holding on to selfishness.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
First Corinthians will take us on a journey. We\u2019ll look at the struggles of one of the first local churches in all of history. We\u2019ll see that the Corinthians weren\u2019t much different from us. And we\u2019ll realize that Paul\u2019s words to them still ring true today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But before we jump into 1 Corinthians, spend a few minutes writing out a short prayer to God. Ask him to use this study to change you. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Open up your Bible to 1 Corinthians. Go ahead and read the entire first chapter. As you read, ask yourself this question: What was the problem in the Corinthian church?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1 Corinthians 1:1\u201331 (ESV): <\/p>
1\u00a0Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes,
2\u00a0To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:
3\u00a0Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4\u00a0I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, 5\u00a0that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge\u2014 6\u00a0even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you\u2014 7\u00a0so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8\u00a0who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9\u00a0God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
10\u00a0I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 11\u00a0For it has been reported to me by Chloe\u2019s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12\u00a0What I mean is that each one of you says, \u201cI follow Paul,\u201d or \u201cI follow Apollos,\u201d or \u201cI follow Cephas,\u201d or \u201cI follow Christ.\u201d 13\u00a0Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14\u00a0I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15\u00a0so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16\u00a0(I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) 17\u00a0For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
18\u00a0For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19\u00a0For it is written, <\/p>\u201cI will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.\u201d<\/p>
20\u00a0Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21\u00a0For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22\u00a0For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23\u00a0but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24\u00a0but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25\u00a0For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.<\/p>
26\u00a0For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27\u00a0But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28\u00a0God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29\u00a0so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30\u00a0And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31\u00a0so that, as it is written, \u201cLet the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
The Corinthian church suffered from division. We\u2019ll see it all throughout the book. The struggling church fought over leadership, spiritual gifts, food, marriage, and theology. Since the theme of disunity runs throughout the letter, it\u2019s tempting to think that was the church\u2019s problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it wasn\u2019t. Disunity was only a symptom of a far more insidious\u2014and common\u2014 disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Did you catch the real issue that was going on in Corinth? It was selfishness. They were so consumed with themselves that they tried to solve their problems their own way, held on to their culture, and, as a result, blasted chasms between them and other Christians.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No one likes to admit to selfishness\u2014 especially people who claim to follow Jesus. But it often sneaks into our lives in ways we don\u2019t readily see. And then it spills over in ways we never expect. For the Corinthians, their selfishness led to severe divisions in the church. What is it for us? We\u2019ll spend the rest of the study unpacking that very question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now that we know the main problem Paul\u2019s tackling in 1 Corinthians, take a moment to be honest with God. Write down any fears or concerns you have about confronting the problem of selfishness. Ask God to use this study to turn your gaze to him.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
