What Is God’s Spirit Like?

Fri. Sep 15, 2023

13So … Then Samuel returned to Ramah… 15Some of Saul’s servants said to him, “A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you. 16Let us find a good musician to play the harp… He will play soothing music, and you will soon be well again.” 17“All right,” Saul said. “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him here.” 18One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player… 19So Saul sent messengers to Jesse to say, “Send me your son David, the shepherd”…

Today we are looking at (a fictional) Samuel’s letter to David based on 1 Samuel 16:13-23, the next part in the story.

Dear David,

I received news that King Saul summoned you to be his harpist, so I am writing you about what you will need. It’s crucial to grasp the significance of the anointing. That oil running down your forehead wasn’t just tradition; it was the Holy Spirit setting you apart for God’s work. This is the Gift of God for His chosen ones. I want you to understand how this Spirit will be your companion, guide, and strength.

First, the Holy Spirit will be your comforter and your instructor in the laws and ways of God. He is like a person residing in your soul. The time will come when you will feel isolated, even endangered. In those moments, the Spirit will draw near, providing the comfort and moral compass you’ll need.

Second, the Holy Spirit will endow you with wisdom far beyond your years or experience. In the royal court, you will be surrounded by power, intrigue, and temptations of many kinds. You will need more than human cunning. The Spirit will give you discernment, helping you to judge situations and people rightly. So follow the leading of the Spirit. For when you do, you will not carry out the desires of the flesh, which will lead to death.

Third, your gifting in music is not incidental. The Spirit will give you gifts for the service of God’s people. The Spirit will use your harp to deliver solace and perhaps even healing. Your music, when inspired by the Spirit, will be a balm to the tormented souls. Your artistry will be a ministry. The Spirit will equip you with more gifts and talents. If you are faithful in the small things, God will entrust you with greater things.

Lastly, you’ll find the Spirit to be a source of uncommon courage and valor. There are many challenges that lie ahead, but you won’t face them alone. I heard that you stood against lions and bears to protect the sheep in the past. You will stand against greater threats in the future, and the Spirit will give you the courage to prevail.

David, this Spirit is not a force to be summoned at will, but a divine presence to be welcomed and followed. Keep your heart open, your ears attentive, and your eyes focused on God’s path. In doing so, you’ll fulfill the destiny that you were anointed for. So, what will you do in your daily routine at the court to be more aware of God’s Spirit’s presence in your life?

Your Father in the Faith,

Samuel

God’s spirit leads, guides, and comforts me. When I feel discouraged or disheartened His Spirit encourages me to remain faithful. Things I do to follow the Spirit’s leading daily is connect with Him through His Word and prayer. Also, connecting with His people by being a part of the community/small group and getting involved in ministry helps me continue to grow and follow Him.

From sister Becky
Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? ( 1 Corinthians 3:16)
I know for a fact that God’s Spirit resides in my soul and I attribute my good conscience as a reminder of the Spirit talking to me. Whenever I hear my conscience nudging me to do good, I know it must be God’s Spirit. At times i’m obedient to the Spirit and at times i ignore the Spirit. It’s freaky but at times I would hear a voice calling my name “Becky” but then I look around and no one is there so I attribute it to God’s spirit sense of humor to remind me that He is always with me even when don’t physically see Him. God’s spirit is also like a voice inside me telling me to steer from danger and remind me of God’s Words and to be obedient to Him.
The Spirit is continually helping me to have love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5: 22-23).

In my daily routine I try to keep my mind, eyes and heart open to hear from the Spirit. I usually remind myself as circumstances arise and ask myself the question, “what would Jesus do?”. That question help me to step back and refocus so I can hear from the Spirit better. Also talking to God via prayers, reading God’s words from the bible, listening to online sermons and listening to gospel music help me stay in tune with the Spirit’s lead.

Good morning ladies!
God is so good!
Thank you for sharing your experiences with our loving and kind God.

My experience of God the Holy Spirit has been kind and gentle. Greatly patient with me.
To follow The Holy Spirit’s leading when I open my eyes I thank the Lord for this day. For giving me another day to live. I try to audio read the Bible app or the RP’s Walk through the Bible series to get my mind on the right track in the morning. During the day I try to pause and seek God. I forget a lot of the times though bc I’m too “busy”. The Holy Spirit’s peace is most present during the quietness of the day so I treasure those times.

Have a blessed day!🙏🏻❤️

(from Vincent)
God’s spirit in my life has taken a form of a guiding hand (also a Dove). Like Charles, I feel like a child, with God as the protectful Father sending a guidance in times of darkness. In order to follow the Holy Spirit’s guide, I pray everyday. In addition, I pray for signs and the ability to see the signs He provides.

One thing that I do in my daily routine to follow the Spirit’s leading more is having no music when I drive alone or run so that I can use that as silent time. It helps me in the mornings and after work mainly to listen to God by praying and I find that I’m usually calmer when I have that time.

My experience with God’s Spirit is limited, as I found my faith in God this year. However, as I share in my testimony, when I went to harvest, I felt God’s Spirit like I had never experienced before. So, for me, God’s Spirit is my instructor. In my daily life routine, I regularly attend church to meet God’s family and pray, discussing whatever happened that day and expressing my appreciation to God for various things.

One thing that I have been doing in my daily routine is simply praying to God every day. I can see that having a prayer life changed my relationship with God. He comforts me when I come to Him with my struggles or when I’m in the valley. He provides for my needs. Not only so, He gives me wisdom and guidance, whether in big or small things. This helps me to rely on Him every day because I know that He has a great plan for me and I trust Him. I understand the meaning and the importance of prayer in my life. Better yet, the Holy Spirit also corrects me whenever I’m doing something wrong. I pray that God would help me to come to Him through prayers every day so that I can continue to experience God’s love and His goodness in my life.

Gods spirit is one of the most comforting feeling. it’s just what i imagine peace and comfort to looks like. i sit in silence and try to just be still. whether it means crying out or just enjoying the silence i practice to ensure that my heart doesn’t take over and i stay in line with seeing how He sees. i pray to encourage more habits and continue to be dependent on God like a newborn. amen
