GeA03-3: The Cultural Mandate

Wed. Sep 24, 2025

Genesis 1:27-28 (NIV84)

27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

God’s first words to humanity after creating them in His image were not a set of abstract rules, but a commission, a job description. We often call it the “Cultural Mandate.” It contains two foundational directives: first, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth,” and second, “subdue it…and have dominion.” At first glance, the word “subdue” might sound harsh to our modern ears, as if it were a license for exploitation. Some have certainly treated it that way, viewing nature as a thing to be conquered and consumed for profit. But this is to read our own fallenness back into the text.

To understand what God meant, we must look at what He Himself had just been doing. He began with a world that was “formless and empty.” Over the first 3 days, he formed it by separating, distinguishing, and bringing order. Then, in days 4-6, He filled it with life. It is no coincidence that He now commands us to do the same. We are to continue the work He began. We are to “fill” the earth by building families and societies. And we are to “form” it—or “subdue” it—by continuing His creative development.

This is a call to build culture. To subdue the earth is to draw out its undeveloped potential. When a farmer cultivates a field, when a musician arranges pitches into a symphony, when a teacher brings shape to an uninformed mind, when a leader brings order out of chaos—they are all obeying this mandate. Nature is not a wicked thing to be beaten down; it is an unfinished canvas, and we, as God’s representatives, are called to carry on the work of painting. Our work, our creativity, and our cultivation of the world are not distractions from spiritual life; they are the very essence of our divine job description.

Reflect, Share & Prayer: Think about the work you do, whether paid or unpaid. How can you see it not just as a task, but as an opportunity to “form” and “fill” your corner of creation, continuing God’s creative work? Pray for ways to express it in your daily tasks.

(from Vincent)
Since being renewed, I view every interaction, whether at work or volunteering, as an opportunity to spread the gospel. I am not sure what the prompt means by forming or filling my corner of creation, so I am going to interpret it in two ways. The first, literally, I pray to go forth and multiply with my wife. I pray to have healthy children, and if God deems we cannot, we will adopt. I believe that is an important aspect of Holy Matrimony. The second, figuratively, I hope to be a vessel of God, guiding whomever seeking God a piece of guidance. Whether planting or growing the seed, I pray to take part in glorifying his kingdom and expanding God’s spiritual family. I will leave with a verse (trying to do one everyday) “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal 6:2). As the Family and Church grows, I pray we lift each other up, with love and honor.

Prayer: Dear Father, I thank you for creating us in your image, and I pray that we continue to form a reflection of You. As we continue our week, I pray that You give us the Gift of Discernment and awareness to those seeking the Truth around us. I pray that we can form and fill your creation, bringing as much loss children back to your family as possible. Please fill us with the Holy Spirit and to provide conviction and renewal in us everyday. In Jesus’ name, amen.

My little corner of creation consists of three little girls that take so much time and energy, that sometimes I find myself just going through the motions of taking care of them with a heart of bitter sacrifice, instead of doing things out of joy and love. But when I remember that God has entrusted me with these precious lives, it shifts my perspective. Each moment of care—whether it’s wiping tears, cleaning up spills, or answering endless questions—is an opportunity to reflect Christ’s love to them. It reminds me that my role as their mom is not just duty, but a sacred calling to nurture, guide, and delight in these little princesses He has placed in my care.

Lord, I pray that you give me renewed strength to care joyfully for my children. I’ve been trying to be very intentional in raising them in Your ways, but sometimes my heart is full of bitterness for the sacrifices that I’ve made for them. Forgive me for that, for my “sacrifices” are microscopic compared to Yours. Forgive my forgetfulness and sometimes ungratefulness for the blessings you’ve given.

After reading this article, I actually do want to pray to God for subduing the earth as He intended. Never thought about continuing God’s creative decelopment on earth as I do my job. It can be creative in the way how I perceive my guests and how I interact with them and meet their needs. I’m not sure how that is gonna be related to subduing the earth, but it does shed light on my perception towards my job, which is not merely working to get paid but to fill my role in God’s continuing development of earth. I ask Jesus to triple the mental energy that I’m using at work right now because I’m in guest service and all I deal with is customers/guests. Extra energy will help me to see more of their need and serve people genuinely so they feel they are taken care of.

In medicine the process of gathering and sifting through a constellation of symptoms, lab tests and data to arrive at a diagnosis and treatment plan is akin to bringing order out of chaos. Restoring health and function from diseased or broken organs/systems is also bringing order out of entropy.
Lord Jesus, you are the great physician-I pray for wisdom/discernment and joy as I care for the patients who put their trust in me..always looking for opportunities to point them to the Great Physician.

Almost in all the lines of work I have been in, there has been opportunities to cut corners and to things the easy way. When I view this job as a work being done not only to honor God but to also care for others or deliver them their vision with hard work. Both my jobs give me unlimited range of creativity. This is dangerous to an extent, but having Christ as the focus allows for stability in not leaning either way too heavy. I pray God can fuel me even more to be that light in someone’s day because as of late I have not been caring as much about that.

Since I am retired, my main job now is to take care of people who are living in my house, support my husband in his ministry, and care for people in the church. God has given me a special heart for the younger generation, especially those who come from broken families. I try to build relationships with teens, making myself available for them and sometimes even acting silly so it’s easier for them to feel close to me.

Lately, though, I’ve felt such a heavy burden for some at church. I even find myself praying in the middle of my workouts. Have you ever felt so burdened that you can’t find the words to pray, but just lean your heart toward God and ask the Spirit to intercede on your behalf? That’s where I’ve been. My heart aches to see some living in sin with hearts that are hardened.

My life is so blessed, abundantly blessed, and I don’t want to live a life of indulgence. God said to love our neighbors as ourselves, but I doubt that ever in my life I have truly loved anyone as I love myself. I want to grow in that love and in sacrificial care for others.

Lord, thank You for entrusting me with the younger generation. Give me wisdom, patience, and love as I walk with them. Where words fail, let Your Spirit intercede. Soften hardened hearts and draw them toward You. Forgive me where I have failed to love others as I love myself. Help me to live generously, not indulgently, pour Your love through me so I can be a true reflection of You to those You’ve placed in my care. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I remember when I was serving at May’s kitchen. I was not there because I volunteered to go. My English was just bad and I thought Jenney was bring me to a restaurant. But God presented me the opportunity to serve the homeless people. I feel like that was God guiding me to fill my corner of the creation.

Father God, thank you for giving me so many opportunities to be a busy bee in your garden of creation. You showed me how beautiful the earth is. I pray that you will continue to give me the strength and opportunity to be a part of your master plan. I pray that you will enlighten me to know what more do I need to do and what I need to be. Amen.

From Celeste

Reflect and share:
When I think about the work I do, whether at my job as a paralegal/legal assistant, in service for NA, or in my daily devotions, I can see it as more than just a list of tasks. At the law firm, when I’m helping with divorces or trust and estate matters, I’m not only organizing documents or help draft pleadings. I help bring in order, guidance, and sometimes peace into the client’s lives that at time feels overwhelming or broken. In my service work for NA, saying yes to a commitment and showing up isn’t just a responsibility or a task, it’s my way of bringing in support, hope, and connections, giving back to the community. It reflects God’s creative work of building relationships and getting a second chance. Even in my daily devotions, I recognize that I’m filling it with God’s work. In all of these ways, I’m “forming and filling” my corner of creation, where there might otherwise be chaos.

Prayer:
Father, help me see my work; at my law firm, in NA, and in my devotions; not just as tasks, but as chances to bring order, love, and hope. Shape and form me so I can reflect you, in all that I do. In Jesus name. Amen.
