Passages: Mark 10:42-45; Philippians 2:3-8

Big Idea: True greatness is found in Christ-like humility and sacrificial service.

1. Opening Activity (10 minutes)

  • Icebreaker Question: “Who is someone you admire and why?”
    • Guide the discussion to identify qualities of greatness. Highlight if these are more about power or humility.

2. Observation Questions (15 minutes)

Read Mark 10:42-45

  • What does Jesus say about the leaders of the Gentiles and how they lead?
  • How does Jesus describe the path to greatness?
  • What are the key words Jesus uses to describe true leadership?

Read Philippians 2:3-8

  • What mindset does Paul call us to adopt in verse 5?
  • How does Paul describe Jesus’ actions and His attitude?
  • What phrases indicate humility and service in these verses?

3. Interpretation Questions (20 minutes)

  • Mark 10:42-45: Why do you think Jesus contrasts worldly leaders with His idea of greatness?
  • Philippians 2:3-8: What does it mean that Jesus “made Himself nothing” and “took on the form of a servant”?
  • How are the ideas of leadership in Mark 10 and Philippians 2 similar?
  • Why is humility essential for true greatness, according to these passages?

4. Application Questions (25 minutes)

  • In what ways are we tempted to pursue greatness according to worldly standards (e.g., seeking recognition, authority, control)?
  • Think of a recent example when you had the opportunity to serve but chose self-interest instead. What could you do differently next time?
  • Philippians 2:3-4 says, “In humility value others above yourselves.” How could you put this into practice in your family, workplace, or church this week?
  • Who can you serve in a meaningful way this week, reflecting Christ’s attitude? What specific action can you take?

5. Group Activity: “The Ripple Effect” (15 minutes)

  • Instructions: Each person writes down one way they can serve others this week. Then, share these commitments aloud with the group.
  • Discussion: How do our small acts of service contribute to a broader impact? How might God use our obedience for His purposes?

6. Prayer (10 minutes)

  • Prayer Focus: Pray for humility in each group member’s heart. Ask God to show opportunities to serve others sacrificially, just as Jesus did.
  • Have one or two members volunteer to pray for the strength to live out Jesus’ model of greatness through service.

Key Takeaway: True greatness isn’t found in power or status but in embracing Christ’s humility and serving others sacrificially. Let’s strive to follow Jesus’ example in our relationships and daily lives.
