Can an Eternal Promise Change Your Life?

Sun. Oct 29, 2023

When King David was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all the surrounding enemies, the king summoned Nathan the prophet. “Look,” David said, “I am living in a beautiful cedar palace, but the Ark of God is out there in a tent!” Nathan replied to the king, “Go ahead and do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you.” But that same night the LORD said to Nathan, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD has declared: Are you the one to build a house for me to live in? I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day… Now go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth! And I will provide a homeland for my people Israel, planting them in a secure place where they will never be disturbed. Evil nations won’t oppress them as they’ve done in the past, starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Furthermore, the LORD declares that he will make a house for you—a dynasty of kings! For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he sins, I will correct and discipline him with the rod, like any father would do. But my favor will not be taken from him as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from your sight. Your house and your kingdom will continue before me for all time, and your throne will be secure forever.’ ” So Nathan went back to David and told him everything the LORD had said in this vision.

2 Samuel 7:1–17, NLT

Dear King David, Anointed of the Lord,

I write to you in the aftermath of a divine revelation, one that has shifted the course of our history and your legacy. I know your heart was set on building a temple for the Lord, a noble desire indeed. However, God has something else in mind, something far more enduring than stone and cedar—a covenant that will have everlasting implications.

Firstly, let’s consider the gravity of this covenant. God has promised that your dynasty will be eternal. This is unprecedented; even the great patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were not given such a promise. Your throne will be established forever, and this is not just about an earthly kingdom but points to a heavenly reality. Your lineage will produce the Messiah, the Savior of the world.

Secondly, God is making this covenant unconditionally. Unlike the Covenant He had with Moses for our people, which was based on the obedience of the Israelites, this covenant depends solely on God’s faithfulness. You are not required to do anything to earn this; it is a gift, a testament to God’s unchanging love. He will discipline your descendants if they stray, but His love and His promise will never depart from them. This is a covenant of grace, one that stands irrespective of human failure.

Thirdly, this covenant is not just for you but for all of Israel and, indeed, for all of humanity. Through your line will come the One who will bless all nations, fulfilling the promise made to Abraham. This is a global vision, a divine strategy for the redemption of mankind. This is God’s grand design, and you are a pivotal part of it.

Lastly, God’s promise to give you rest from all your enemies is significant. It’s not just about military victory; it’s a foreshadowing of the eternal rest that will come through the Messiah. A rest from striving, from sin, and from the brokenness of this world.

King David, this covenant is a monumental moment in the history of God’s people and the world. It’s a promise that extends beyond time, a cornerstone that God will build upon until the end of days. I urge you to ponder deeply on this, to align your heart and actions according to this divine promise.

In the service of the Most High,

Nathan the Prophet

An eternal promise can definitely change my life. Knowing I am safe and secure and there’s a place for me in heaven as long as I believe and turn my life over to Christ, this is reassuring for for on earth here as it is only temporary and I am living only for His glory. Our God is a God that always delivers and a Promise Keeper, time and time again in history and He has never failed to do so. His covenant with David helps my understanding of God’s love in that God has overcome the world and all it encompasses, its temptations, failures, and brokenness but yet He has come out victorious, still loves us unconditionally like before. God is a strict but loving God and knowing this allows me to submit to Him even more

An eternal promise can change our lives because it can be a provisional and unconditional blessing. God’s Covenant with David demonstrates His love in many ways. It shows His love by providing protection, provision, and security from one generation to another. His love points to a “heavenly reality” that is beyond this earthly life. It is an unconditional blessing that others can also experience. His love offers rest for our weary bodies and souls.

I would say that an eternal promise can absolutely change the entire trajectory of one’s life. It certainly has mine! I would have to add, though, that for me, at least, the real implications of it can take time to comprehend and develop. Yet once we begin to understand God’s eternal promise of salvation for His people, we begin to develop an eternal perspective which, in time, can and does completely change our own attitude and behavior, which leads us on a completely new and different path with a whole new way of life. The covenant that God made with David helps us to understand that God’s love is not contingent upon what we do, (or don’t do,) but is completely based on who He is and His faithfulness to fulfill His promise. And while my feelings and actions have no impact upon His love and faithfulness, certainly His love and faithfulness will drastically impact my feelings and actions.

How great God’s covenant is with David that we all are reaping the benefits of it to this day! I am so glad God made a new covenant with David…this new covenant “depends solely on God’s faithfulness .” Regardless of our sinful nature, God will keep his promise to save us from our sinful ways. He has a plan to redeem and restore our relationship with him. It’s his gift, an unconditional blessing, if we want to accept and receive it. This eternal promise reminds me of how deeply he loves us and wants us to put our hope and trust in his faithfulness so we can find rest from striving to measure up, from the weight of our sins, or from the craziness that is going on in this world.

Theoretically, an eternal promise should change your life, right? The problem seems to be that certain personality types need short-term gratification more than holding out for long-term gains.
The grind of one exam after another through undergrad, med school then residency was grueling but the promise of finally graduating and being skilled enough to heal people made the 11 years bearable. And that’s only 11 years!
I have a hard time grasping “eternity” so I think that’s one reason why eternal promises don’t spawn the life transformation that we think they should

An eternal promise can change my life because based off today’s passage, God’s love, faithfulness, and grace is a gift to us. We will be disciplined when stray off the path or sin but His love remains. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for God’s promises. To have this relationship and walk with Him no matter my sinfulness and brokenness. This covenant goes to show God’s love tremendously, beyond our human understanding. An infinite love for us even though He knew sinfulness of humanity. Thank you Lord for today’s reading and the love You have for us. I pray to release myself to follow You and love like You loved.

A eternal promise can definitely change my life. A promise from God is a promise that I know will remain no matter what, whereas promises that are made by others may be broken in a way that God’s wont. The three points — that the covenant with David is unconditional, a rest from enemies, and the huge gravity of a promise from God of eternal life makes it even more powerful in my life. It makes me want to live a life differently than what the world tells me a good life looks like when God promised eternal life

An eternal promise can absolutely change my life because there is no better thing that exists on Earth than an eternal promise. It provides a sense of security, purpose, and lasting commitment that can profoundly influence the course of one’s life. I can clearly see God’s love, especially in God making the Covenant with David unconditionally. This means that no matter how sinful we are, God gives us unwavering love and guides us to the right path.

From Becky:
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Romans 10:9 – If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

God’s eternal promise to give me everlasting life ( eternal life) definitely makes me live life with a purpose. The purpose is to live life to glorify God and to share His good news of eternal life to others. God created humans to have a relationship with Him so applying that understanding is invaluable through the gift of the Holy Spirit living inside of me, I get to have a relationship with God, witness His miracles, His protection, His blessings and be like minded with God. Also, I look forward to life after this earth and eternal life in Heaven with an everlasting relationship with God.

The Covenant God made with David help my understanding that God’s love’s is unconditional. His love is for all humanity and His gift of eternal life for all humanity is based on His grace not by our good works. Despite the Israelites disobedience, God made a covenant to send a Messiah (Jesus) to save the world from sins and striving of good works. To receive this saving grace, we need to confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in our heart that God has raised Him from the dead, we will be saved.
